THE BRAND

Daniel Ogassian is a Los Angeles-based artist and designer who uses a “subtractive sculptural process” to fashion and refine the master models, and then oversee the creation of the finished tiles by expert local craftsmen.  Daniel is renowned for his ability to combine patterns of sharp contrast that are tactile and dramatic. Many of his designs act almost like optical illusions where the interplay of light and shadows create a three-dimensional effect that is both beautiful and captivating. Each pattern is created through a unique marriage of Old World hand-craftsmanship and modern technology.

A DEPTH OF THE SURFACE
A MANIFESTO BY DANIEL OGASSIAN
I dedicated my life’s work to designing the surface of things as I truly believe that the beauty of life starts on the surface. It can imbue the joy and the paradoxical depth of discovery, and the experience of preciousness derived from reaction to the chemistry of the elements.

Intertwined with the geometry, a code of surface is not designed—it already exists. It can be discovered through the exacting linear and geometric paths that divide the plane while melting seamlessly into the aquamarine, the shades of rust and orange that form new and unexpected shades.
I am in a way, a philosophical machinist, a chemist, a decoratist, and geometrist who provides emotional furnishings. I am to create a physical consumption of a surface, defined by the beauty of structure and the optimism about the things to come.
There is philosophical tension between the ornamental and true preciousness of minerals and their chemistry when combined with the chemistry of a pattern. For instance, cobalt and copper may make blue, but when melted, the reactivity fluxed into the mineral creates another nuanced variate rainbow of the elements.
In the essence, my approach to design is to remove my authorship by combining the elements of purity, chemistry, and geometry based on a belief that the humankind has always known the code of things, and that design is about simplicity, elements, and the earthen geometries that can be controlled to reflect the natural order. Take, for an instance, an experience of taking a morning bath surrounded by a golden Japanese Geo tile flickering in the glorious bright light to awaken the senses. Or, the soothing feeling of a lightly-toned Penta flooring to evoke the emotion and true meaning of “living” in a living room.
My role in evoking these experiences is a humble one. I am in a way, a philosophical machinist, a chemist, a decoratist, and geometrist who provides emotional furnishings. I am to create a physical consumption of a surface, defined by the beauty of structure and the optimism about the things to come.
What is geometry?
Why do we react to it?
To me, geometry is an expression of truth—a path from nothing to the infinite universe that may ultimately gravitate back into nothingness. The surface expresses a path of life, and akin to exploring the beauty of nature, you have this chemical resonance to reflect upon—the beauty that changes in perpetuity. The feeling of walking into a gilded geometric powder room and being confronted with the beauty that reprograms to let go of negative emotions. Akin to a bird’s nest that is lined with leaves and straw, the geometric expressions have the power of enveloping consciousness and bringing thoughts back to simplicity and calm.
I see a beauty in the discovery of pattern and geometry, and with my work I try to find and bring life into the surface where patterns spring to life, multiply and melt together. A subtle nucleus of perfection where my own mortality with a finite energy burst to celebrate a dimension of perfect… A literal chemistry of surface that becomes poetic, or, perhaps musical. My job is to create a dance between the oxides of minerals, the melt and heat to sometimes give birth to emerald surfaces… and, sometimes to subtract all color and luminance for tranquility to arrive at toned and tuned-out patterns.
